Energy & Utilities Software Development

Utilities carry a burden most sectors do not: you bill every customer in your service area every month, whether or not the meter was read, and a billing error becomes a public complaint. Add field crews without connectivity, assets spread across districts, and regulators who audit both tariff application and outage response, and the software requirements diverge sharply from generic ERP.

Strategic Approach

The Challenge & The Orus Solution

We turn complex business challenges into resilient, scalable digital systems.

The Challenge

The problem

Meter reading, billing and complaint handling often sit in three systems that reconcile monthly. A disputed bill then takes days to investigate because nobody can reconstruct what was read and when.

Field crews work where there is no signal. Systems that assume connectivity produce paper workarounds, and the paper never makes it back into the data.

  • Billing disputes that take days to trace back to a reading
  • Estimated bills issued because a reading was missed, then contested
  • Field work recorded on paper and re-keyed days later, or not at all
  • Outage response measured by phone calls rather than by system data
  • Asset maintenance run on a calendar rather than on condition or usage
The Orus Studio Solution

Our solution

Readings, billing and complaints run against one consumer record, so a disputed bill is answered by opening the account rather than by an investigation. Every reading carries its source — meter, mobile capture or estimate — and estimates are flagged rather than hidden.

The field app works fully offline. Crews record work, photographs and meter readings without signal and sync when they return to coverage, which is the only way field data actually reaches the system.

  • One consumer record across metering, billing and complaints
  • Readings tagged by source, with estimates explicitly flagged
  • Offline-first field app with photo and GPS evidence
  • Outage tracking with restoration times measured, not reported
  • Condition and usage-based maintenance scheduling
What We Build & Deliver

Software solutions we build

Tailored services and software modules designed around your exact business model, tech stack, and growth goals.

01

Metering and billing

Reading capture, slab and tariff application, bill generation, and adjustment handling with a full trail behind every revision.

02

Consumer management

Connections, disconnections, name changes, load revisions and security deposits against one consumer record.

03

Outage management

Fault logging, crew dispatch, restoration timing and the SAIDI/SAIFI reporting regulators expect.

04

Field workforce app

Offline meter reading, service orders, inspection checklists and photographic evidence with GPS stamping.

05

Asset and network management

Transformers, feeders, poles and lines with condition monitoring and maintenance history.

06

Renewable generation tracking

Plant-level generation, PPA reconciliation and settlement for solar and wind operators.

07

Consumer self

service — Bill view, payment, complaint lodging and outage status on a phone, which removes most call-centre volume.

08

Revenue protection

Consumption anomaly detection to flag possible theft or meter tampering for inspection.

Security & Trust

Security & compliance first

Utilities are critical infrastructure and are regulated as such.

Regulatory reporting
Tariff application, subsidy accounting and commission-mandated reports in submission-ready formats.
Audit trail
Every bill revision, adjustment and write-off traceable to a user, a reason and a timestamp.
Data residency
Deployed in India, on-premise or private cloud, as critical infrastructure policy requires.
Role
based access — Billing, field and finance functions separated, with privileged actions requiring approval.
Consumer data protection
DPDP-aligned consent, retention and access controls on consumer records.
Why Orus Studio

Why businesses choose Orus Studio

01

We design for no signal

Field systems that assume connectivity get worked around with paper. Ours are offline-first by default.

02

Billing disputes become answerable

Every reading carries its source and every revision its reason, so an investigation becomes a lookup.

03

Built for Indian utility structure

Slab tariffs, subsidy accounting and commission reporting are core, not adaptations.

04

On

premise where you need it — Critical infrastructure often cannot sit in a public cloud, and we deploy accordingly.

Who this is for

  • Electricity distribution companies and licensees
  • Water and gas utilities managing metered consumers
  • Solar and wind operators tracking generation against PPAs
  • Utility contractors running metering or field operations
  • Operators whose billing disputes take days to investigate

What you get

  • Metering, billing and consumer management platform
  • Offline-first field workforce app
  • Outage management with regulatory reporting
  • Asset register with maintenance scheduling
  • Consumer self-service portal
  • Full audit trail and source code
Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Transparent answers about timelines, scope, technology stacks, and our process.

Can the field app really work without connectivity?
Yes, and it has to. Readings, service orders, inspections and photographs are captured locally and queued. Sync happens when the device returns to coverage. Field teams work in exactly the places connectivity fails, so this is the requirement that decides whether the system gets used.
How do you handle estimated readings?
They are recorded as estimates, flagged on the bill, and reconciled against the next actual reading. Systems that silently treat estimates as readings are the root of most billing disputes.
Can this integrate with our existing SCADA or meter data system?
Usually yes. We have integrated with head-end systems and with meters that export nothing but scheduled files. Tell us what you run and we will be straight about the effort involved.
Do you support prepaid metering?
Yes, including recharge, balance tracking, low-balance alerting and automated disconnection thresholds where your policy allows it.
